Extreme Downhill International will present the Maryhill Museum Downhill Challenge, July 13 and 14, on the museum's historic Loops Road from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
There's no charge for admission and parking is free. Spectators are encouraged to bring water and a hat. Refreshments will be available.
The event is a qualifier for the NBC Gravity Games and will feature top international athletes on skateboard, gravity bikes and luges, including Biker Sherlock and world renowned Dregs Racing Team, competing for awards and a spot in the finals.
Skateboards and gravity bikes will race on Saturday then luge on Sunday.
Skateboarders and luge competitors will travel 1.2 miles of the Loops Road course at speeds of up to 40 mph as they race each other to the finish line. The road will be lined with straw bales to keep competitors from going off 300 foot slopes. Practice runs start at 8:30 a.m. both days, with racing from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The turnoff to the historic Loops Roads is located off state Highway 14, four miles east of Maryhill Museum. The road consists of 25 turns, eight of which are hairpins. It was the first asphalt paved road in the Pacific Northwest and several miles of it were restored in 1998 through grants provided by Washington State and the U.S. Department of Transportation. Competitors rate it the number one road in the world for this event.
