HOOD RIVER — After starting the season with consecutive losses, the Hood River Valley Eagles responded to the adversity by recording their first 2026 win last week in OSAA Class 5A boys soccer.
The Eagles (1-2) opened their 15-game schedule by dropping a non-league home contest 4-1 to the Class 6A No. 4-ranked Lincoln High Cardinals (2-0) on Aug. 27. In a match-up between 2025 OSAA state playoff squads, the Eagles faced the No. 3-ranked Summit High Storm (2-0-1) Sept. 1 in Bend and lost 2-1.
The Eagles, guided by fourth-year Coach Alvaro Lara, had just one day off prior to a Sept. 3 non-league home match versus the Mountain View High Cougars (0-1) of Bend. The Eagles were well motivated to come out and play well at home and recorded an impressive 5-0 shutout win over the Cougars.
“I’m very proud of the boys,” said Lara, following the win over Mountain View. “We lined up a tough preseason versus Lincoln and Summit, which are two schools that both have great soccer programs. Both of those matches helped us to see the area that we needed to work on and improve. It was great to see the way the boys connected offensively, and they executed very well versus Mountainside.”
The Eagles built a 3-0 first half lead and were led by senior co-captains Santiago Flores (goal, assist), Moises Vega (two goals), and Ben Tama (assist). Junior Tony Hernandez (goal), junior Miguel Lopez (goal) and senior Ernesto Solano (assist) also made offensive contributions.
The Eagles finished in third place in the tough Northwest Oregon Conference in 2025 with a 5-2-1 record (7-7-2 overall). The Eagles advanced to the 5A state playoffs for a third straight year in 2025 and they’re seeking to reach the state playoffs again in November.
HRV plays the Caldera High Wolfpack (0-2) in a non-league game at 5 p.m. Sept. 10 in Bend. They’ll follow with a non-league home game Sept. 15 against the Class 4A Scappoose High Indians (0-2) at Henderson Stadium.
