CANBY – Three straight touchdowns in the middle of the game provided Canby enough of a cushion to beat visiting Hood River Valley, 35-25, in a nonleague Class 5A football contest Sept. 4.
Canby overcame two first-quarter turnovers and a muffed punt to break away from a 7-7 tie and take a 21-7 halftime lead. The Cougars (2-0) scored the first touchdown of the second half - which proved to be the winning points - and pushed their lead to 28-7.
Hood River Valley, playing its season opener, got TD pass receptions from senior Davin Snyder to pull within 28-19. Snyder and quarterback Ian Wells connected nine times – three for touchdowns – to lead the Eagle offense. Snyder’s final catch, from 16 yards away, enabled HRV to pull within 10 points with a little more than three minutes remaining. But a two-point conversion attempt, which would have made it a one-possession game, failed and Canby ran out the clock after the ensuing kickoff.
Hood River capped an impressive 10-play, 85-yard drive with its final score.
Snyder, who opened HRV’s scoring with a 17-yard run on a fly sweep, finished with 165 receiving yards. Wells was 13-for-19 passing for 205 yards.
Two Brody Joyce to Cooper Cousin pass plays resulted in Canby touchdowns. The first score covered 55 yards and the second 64. Canby took its two-TD lead on Aiden Salazar’s six-yard run late in the first half. Cousin caught four passes in the first half; Joyce was 6-for-10 for 167 yards before intermission.
Hood River tied the game, 7-7, on Snyder’s 17-yard run late in the opening period. The drive started after Wells made a diving interception to stop a Canby possession at the Eagle 31. Snyder caught two passes from Wells in the TD drive – for 12 and 22 yards – before scoring on a fly sweep.
