WHITE SALMON — White Salmon Valley School District (WSVSD) Superintendent Rich Polkinghorn began the Oct. 22 board meeting by remembering the three special education students and one teacher who were killed in a school shooting at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend the week prior.
“These were children with disabilities, some with significant support needs, in a classroom where they should have been safe,” he said. “That adds another painful layer to an already heartbreaking loss.”
In light of the tragedy, and in recognition of October as Disability Awareness Month, Polkinghorn then acknowledged WSVSD’s special education staff.
“Their work is built on close relationships, trust, and a deep understanding of the students in their care. I know this tragedy has weighed heavily on them,” he said. I” appreciate the care and commitment they bring to our students, especially while processing something so difficult.”
District partnerships
Polkinghorn said that an Emergency Operations Planning committee brings WSVSD administrators, local police and sheriff representatives, hospital staff, mental health professionals, and school nurses together every other month to “prepare for a coordinated community response" in the event of a local emergency. "That coordination matters throughout an incident, from the initial response to communication with families and safely bringing students back together with their parents,” he said. “I am grateful that our partners make time for this work and share responsibility for the safety of our schools.”
He also emphasized the importance of students, staff, and families to speak up when something isn’t right — with a trusted adult or through the district’s anonymous reporting system.
