THE DALLES - After playing five consecutive road games, The Dalles High Riverhawks returned home for a special Oct. 23 homecoming event in an OSAA Class 4A football Special District 5 matchup against the Ontario High Tigers.
The Riverhawks (0-3 SD5, 3-5 overall) were seeking to notch their first league win in a matchup versus the Tigers (1-2 SD1, 3-5 overall), who were also looking for their first SD1 victory. The Tigers spoiled homecoming for the Riverhawks, as the visitors won, 36-20, snapping a five-game losing streak. It marked the second straight loss for the Riverhawks, who were eliminated from state playoff contention.
The Riverhawks never led in the contest, but it was knotted 6-6 after the first quarter. Junior Lucky Enesi scored on a 78-yard kickoff return to help the Riverhawks get on the scoreboard.
After the Tigers went up 14-6 in the second quarter, the Riverhawks responded with a scoring drive, capped by Rylan Deleon’s four-yard touchdown run, making it 14-12. The Tigers then extended their lead to a 10-point margin at halftime, 22-12.
The Riverhawks fought back and trimmed the deficit to 22-20 in the third quarter. Senior wide receiver Austin Cummins (three catches, 39 yards receiving) scored on a 19-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Ben Graham (11-for-25, 135 yards passing).
The Riverhawks were unable to continue their momentum though from that point on as the Tigers outscored them 14-0 over the remainder of the contest.
Graham (nine carries, 30 yards), senior Creighton Clack (nine carries, 28 yards), Cummins (five carries, 26 yards) and Deleon (six carries, 19 yards) helped provide an offensive boost to the Riverhawks’ ground game, which totaled 106 yards rushing.
The Riverhawks will try to bounce back from the loss versus the Pendleton High Buckaroos (1-2 SD5, 1-7 overall) in the final game of the season at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 on senior night at Sid White Field at the Wahtonka campus. The nine Riverhawk seniors will be honored for their contributions to The Dalles High football program in a special pre-game ceremony.
The Buckaroos lost their last game at home 29-12 to the No. 14-ranked Baker High Bulldogs (3-1 SD5, 6-2 overall). The Buckaroos’ only victory was a 59-26 road win Oct. 9 against Ontario.
