The Dalles High Riverhawks boys and girls swim teams posted 17 top-five finishes — including two wins — in their final regular season meet Feb. 1 at the Hood River Aquatic Center.
The Riverhawks competed in the three-team dual meet with Hood River Valley and Pendleton in a special senior night event.
The Dalles’ wins came from senior Carter Randall in the 100 butterfly, and sophomore Everest Lenardson in the 400 freestyle.
Coach Shea Macnab said: “The kids swam really well and their times showed that they’re in shape now and ready for districts.”
The Riverhawks will compete in the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 1 meet Feb. 9-10 in Molalla. Winners of each event will automatically qualify for the OSAA state meet Feb. 16-17.
Macnab said The Dalles’ swimmers have been working to rebuild their energy levels after having meets and practices canceled two weeks ago because of winter storms.
Randall, one of two seniors on the Riverhawk squad (along with girls swimmer Reta Rincon), won the 100 butterfly in a personal record, 1 minute, 13.75 seconds. He and Rincon were honored for their contributions to the Riverhawk swim program in a senior night ceremony.
Randall said: “I’m hoping that I can qualify for state in the 100 butterfly and we’re hoping to also make it in the relays. I’ve been to the state meet the last two years with our relay teams and I’m hoping to make it one more time. I’ve never advanced to state in an individual event.”
Rincon celebrated her final home swim meet with two top-five finishes, including the 100 breaststroke (1:46.21).
Lenardson won the 400 free (5:17.52) and he combined with Randall, Sawyer Dray, and Maverick Varland for second place (1:58.58) to Hood River (1:50.92) in the 200 free relay. The Dalles’ team of Lenardson, Dray, Randall, and freshman Rhett Loughmiller was second (4:23.10) behind Hood River (4:18.10) in the 400 free relay.
Varland swam to three top-five finishes, paced by his second place in the 100 backstroke (1:24.58).
Loughmiller, Dray and Aiden Nunez took three of the top-six positions in the 50 free. Loughmiller was third (29.98), followed by Dray in fourth (29.27) and Nunez in sixth (32.81).
The Dalles boys beat Pendleton in their dual meet, 69-58, and lost to HRV, 102-41. The Dalles girls lost 126-29 to Pendleton and 132-23 to Hood River.
