The Dalles High had hoped to extend its football win streak to three and remain undefeated Sept 13 at Astoria, but the host Fishermen shut down the Riverhawks and instead earned a 29-0 win.
The Riverhawks, guided by first-year Coach Nate Timmons, trailed just 7-0 at halftime but couldn’t break through Astoria’s defense the entire contest.
“It was definitely a wakeup call for us,” said Timmons, whose team has a bye this week. “I think the bye week comes at the right time, especially after losing to Astoria. There’s a lot of stuff that we have to work on and now we’ll have the time to work on improving things.”
The Riverhawks were outgained offensively in total yards, 258-77. The Riverhawks struggled throughout the contest, committing three turnovers. Quarterback Leighton Voodre (7-for-22, 55 yards passing), receiver Hunter Bustos (28 yards receiving) and running back Josh Brackenbury (nine carries, 27-yards rushing) led the offensive categories.
“All we can do now is to look and see what we need to do better and see what we need to do to prepare for the next game,” said Timmons. “We just need to forget about one tough loss and then we’ll focus on getting better and hopefully have a chance to win next week.”
The Riverhawks play their next game Sept. 27 at No. 2-ranked Philomath (2-0).
With the win, Astoria also snapped a seven-game losing streak that overlapped the past two years. It was Astoria’s first victory since winning 21-12 at home over Madras on Sept. 22, 2023.
“They [Fishermen] are a pretty good team; they’re well coached by Howard Rub, who has been the coach there for a long time and they were very hospitable towards us,” said Timmons.
