The Dalles High Riverhawks took steps toward achieving their goal of the Class 4A boys basketball state playoffs following two Tri-Valley Conference road wins last week.
The Riverhawks (3-2 TVC, 3-15 overall) won 66-44 over the Molalla High Indians (0-4 TVC, 2-14 overall) Jan. 30 and 70-68 on Feb. 2 at Crook County.
The Riverhawks entered the week tied with the Cowboys for third place in the TVC. The top two teams automatically qualify for the state playoffs beginning March 1. The third-place team qualifies for a play-in round match-up. The Riverhawks have five games remaining in the regular season, which concludes Feb. 20.
“I feel confident in every game that our team has an opportunity to win,” said Coach Brian Stevens. “We can win our last five games and possibly win the Tri-Valley League title, but that’s a longshot. We would need some help with that.”
The Riverhawks play their next game Feb. 7 at Estacada (3-1 TVC, 9-8 overall). The two teams are matched up again for a 6:30 p.m. game Feb. 9 in The Dalles.
Against Molalla, junior guard Zak Poole led the Riverhawks in scoring with 19 points, followed by sophomore Calder Morrison (13) and senior Cooper Cummings (10). The game marked the return to the lineup for senior post Will Lee, who played in his first game since Dec. 12 when he suffered a foot injury.
Two days later the Riverhawk traveled to Prineville to face Crook County (3-2 TVC, 10-7 overall), where the Riverhawks earned a payback win. The Cowboys beat host The Dalles 68-55 on Jan. 15.
The Riverhawks overcame a 17-point, third quarter Cowboy lead. Late in the game, Poole got a steal at half court and made a breakaway layup to lift the Riverhawks in front 70-66 with 1:01 left. The Cowboys trimmed the margin to 70-68 and had the final possession. Goulart then made a huge defensive play, blocking a Cowboy shot at the buzzer.
Poole scored a team-high 20 points, followed by Begay (18) and Goulart with a season-high 18 points.
The Riverhawks split two games with Estacada last season as each team won at home. Estacada is in second place in the six-team league behind Madras (4-1 TVC, 12-5 overall).
