THE GORGE — Hood River Valley’s boys soccer team recovered from a 5-0 loss at Class 6A Grant of Portland on Sept. 22, to beat visiting Woodburn, 2-0, on Sept. 24.
The loss to eighth-ranked Grant (5-2) and the subsequent win over 5A Woodburn (3-4) were part of Coach Alvaro Lara’s tough slate of nonleague matches to help prepare the Eagles (4-4) for Northwest Oregon Conference games which begin next week.
HRV senior Benjamin Tama scored both goals against Woodburn, one in each half. The first was a right-footed liner from 29 yards away into the right part of the net past a diving Woodburn keeper. A Woodburn handball on an Eagle free kick set up Tama’s second-half penalty kick, which he converted.
Hood River opens NWOC play 7 p.m., Oct. 7 at home against Parkrose.
