HOOD RIVER - After the first three weeks of the season, the Hood River Valley girls volleyball team is hoping a two-match home swing will change its momentum in the Northwest Oregon Conference.
In a tough early season nonleague schedule in which they faced some very highly regarded teams, the No. 21-ranked Eagles have won three games. The Eagles (1-2 NWOC, 3-7 overall) entered the week in fourth place in the seven-team NWOC standings.
After a Sept. 10 win over Putnam in their league opener, the Eagles played every match on the road, including two weekend tournaments and two NWOC games in a span of seven days.
The Eagles lost to La Salle Prep at a tournament at Milwaukie High School and then lost league matches to Sandy (3-0 NWOC, 5-3 overall) and Centennial (4-0 NWOC, 6-1 overall).
The Eagles, guided by second-year Coach Emily Curtis, competed in the Westview Tournament Sept. 19 in Portland. The Eagles played four games against Class 6A teams, and they got a split of the matches.
“The girls played hard and they competed very well,” said Curtis. “There were lots of tough teams there, which was a good experience for our girls.”
The Eagles got off to a great start in their first game, winning 2-0 over the McNary High Celtics (4-5) of Keizer. In their second contest, the Eagles lost 2-0 to the No. 7-ranked Westview High Wildcats (11-2). The Eagles then bounced back in their next match - a 2-0 win over the Glencoe High Crimson Tide (2-9). In their final match of the tournament, the Eagles lost 2-0 to the No. 3-ranked Central Catholic Rams (11-3).
The Eagles play visiting Parkrose High Broncos (1-2 NWOC, 1-4 overall) on Sept. 22 and the Milwaukie High Mustangs (0-4 NWOC, 0-6 overall) on Sept. 24.
