The Dalles High cross country team opened its season Saturday with a road run along the riverfront trail, where senior Juan Diego Contreras looked in mid-season form.

Contreras covered the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 33 seconds, nearly two minutes ahead of the next fastest finisher, senior teammate Kayden McCavic (19:02).
