Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Verl “Kit” Carson McCown, born April 2, 1963, died Sept. 2, 2026. He was 63 years old.
Verl was always known by his nickname Kit to his family and friends. He was born in The Dalles, Oregon, but lived in Portland, Oregon, for the past 30 years until his death. He attended grade school in The Dalles and in White Salmon, Washington, and graduated high school from Dufur High School in 1981. He spent his summers fishing in Alaska for many years after graduation. In 1992, he was paralyzed in a car accident. After learning how to live as a paraplegic, he lived and traveled independently from then until his death. He never let his circumstances defeat his spirit, and he was an inspiration to all who knew him.
He is survived by his sister, niece and nephew, as well as a lot of extended family in the Gorge area and beyond.
There will be a memorial service tentatively scheduled for Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. in White Salmon at the Mountain View Grange, 1085 N. Main Ave., White Salmon. Please double check the calendar page at www.grange.org/mountainviewwa98/rentals/ to confirm.
