Sophomore Fionna Marsalis, a key player on both ends of the floor for the Hawks, left Tuesday night’s league game in the third with an apparent back injury.
RJ ChavezAfter a dominant 45-7 win over Mitchell/Spray last weekend, the Horizon girls basketball team welcomed South Wasco County to the Hawks Nest on Tuesday night.
With a win, the girls would have opened league competition at home undefeated with a 3-0 record, but South Wasco County would get the best of the Hawks, winning by a final score of 56-27.
Despite this being the girls second-largest margin of defeat on the season, it was a much closer game than the final score indicates.
The girls had the lead for almost the entirety of the first quarter, and they had a slight edge heading into the second quarter after junior guard Kaitlin Wenz hit a three in the final seconds of the first to take the 11-8 lead.
Horizon was able to build their lead on the defensive end of the floor in the first with an aggressive 2-3 zone that forced South Wasco County into turnovers, but the Hawks were never able to gain any momentum, missing opportunities on the offensive end to put the ball in the hoop.
The Hawks opened the second quarter with back-to-back turnovers, but fortunately, it only led to one free throw for South Wasco County.
And the inability to score off those turnovers on the offensive end for South Wasco County gave the girls a chance to compose themselves — and it seemed the girls would do just that.
Junior guard Marena Decker, following the turnovers, hit a three from the top of the key and then a steal in the open court by Wenz led to a layup that would give the Hawks a 16-9 lead halfway through the second quarter.
But things would go downhill for the Hawks on both ends of the floor following the five-point swing led by Decker and Wenz.
South Wasco County would respond by going on a 22-0 run that extended all way until mid-way through the third quarter.
Turnovers plagued this team and the inability to break South Wasco County’s press led to them being down 32-16 halfway through the third quarter.
The Hawks were unable to get anything going for the remainder of the game and South Wasco County closed out the game on a 24-11 run to drop the Hawks to 6-9 on the season and 3-2 in league play.
Next up for the Hawks was an away game versus Sherman on Jan. 19 (results unavailable at press time). The following game for the girls is a home matchup on Saturday, Jan. 20 against Condon/Wheeler. This game is scheduled to tip-off at 4 p.m.
