The Dalles High Riverhawks have reached the OSAA Class 4A state tournament the past two years and they’re hoping to make a third straight appearance in 2024.
The Riverhawks, guided by second-year Coach Teresa Morris, will have to do it with a much different squad though. They lost eight graduated seniors from a team that finished in second place in the Tri-Valley Conference at 7-3 (14-10 overall in 2023) behind Crook County.
“I do expect us to continue having more success and I think we’ll have a pretty solid all-around good team this year,” Morris said. “I think we’ll have an excellent chance to reach the state playoffs this year and I feel like we’re capable of being a contender for the TVC title again, too. We’ll have some seniors who will step up and help us out a lot. We went to an offseason team camp in La Grande earlier this month and we had a lot of court time for our players there. We did a lot of good things, and the team looked pretty strong.”
The 2023 Riverhawks beat Pendleton in a state play-in match and then lost twice at the 4A state tourney at Springfield High School.
The Riverhawks will be led this year by four returnees from their 2023 squad, including seniors Madison Brock (TVC honorable mention), Christina Geary, Laci Hoylman (TVC second team all-league), and junior AizLynn Rubio.
“We definitely will have a much different-looking team this year,” said Morris. “I think it’s going to be a really good team though and the four returning players will definitely be making lots of key contributions for us. The kids moving up from our junior varsity team are a pretty strong group as well and we also have a fairly strong group of incoming freshmen players who will also help us out a lot too.”
