Adams leads HRV wrestlers at tourney

HOOD RIVER — Leyton Adams won four of five matches to finish second in the 144-pound division at the Tyrone S. Woods Memorial Tournament on Dec. 6.

Adams, who had 36 wins last season for the Eagles, lost 9-1 in the final to senior Gavin Rangel, who won a state championship as a sophomore for Newberg High. Adams topped 2025 state tourney wrestler Gabriel Benson of Redmond, 15-6, in the semifinals.

Hood River finished ninth in the tourney at Oregon City High School.

Other top six players for HRV included Aaron Smith, who lost a 3-0 decision in the semifinals, but battled back with two wins to place fifth at 215 pounds. Smith’s losses included a close decision to Zac Ortiz, a state tourney wrestler in 2025 for 6A Sprague High of Salem.

Four Eagle wrestlers, Campton Parker (150), Cohen Wagner (120), Copeland Louis (132), and Risor Reierson (190), placed sixth. Wagner won twice before losing in the quarterfinals to 2025 6A state tourney wrestler Nathan Sandusky of Aloha High. Parker also won his first two matches, including an 8-7 second-round decision over third seed Mason Phillippi of Barlow. Parker earned two reversals in the close match, including one in the final 90 seconds.
