To the editor:
I would like everyone in the community to know that starting Nov. 1, 2013, supplemental nutritional benefits will be cut for everyone who receives them. The cuts will range from $11 for a single person per month, which is $121 per year to $36 per month for a family of four, which adds up to $396 per year.
The average benefit per person per meal is $1.50. The community also benefits because the recepient went out and shopped at local stores for food. Now a reduction in benefits agreed to in Washington, D.C., in 2010 is about to take effect.
Not only will the poor and the barely getting by, otherwise known as the working class, will have less direct government assistance, but the demand for food boxes at the food bank will increase proportionally.
Low income families have already given more than they can bear to our nation’s economic policies.Low income communities have suffered higher foreclosure rates and low income families have experienced unemployment at far higher rates. Families with low incomes have seen their opportunities decline as the gap between the rich and the poor grows wider.
I cannot believe the majority of Americans would have ever voted for this deformed piece of compromised legislation that came from the House of Representatives and was signed by the president. The Republicans are definitely in control of the car for this national downward spiral.
The president is sitting in the back seat trying to look busy and accomplishing next to nothing for poor folks.
