THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks are off to a great start in OSAA Class 4A boys soccer after winning their first two nonleague home games last week.
The Riverhawks recorded an impressive 3-1 season-opening victory Sept. 2 over North Marion (1-1). The Huskies lost in the 2024 state championship match.
The Riverhawks, guided by fifth-year Coach Jesus Granados, went up 1-0 at halftime on a goal scored by junior forward Orlando Heredia. Sophomore forward Ismael Cervantes and senior midfielder Juan Camarillo (assist) each scored second half goals for The Dalles. Junior midfielder Ivan Santana had one assist.
Granados said: “We had a goal early in the second half to go ahead 2-0 and then they [Huskies] scored a goal to make it a close 2-1 margin. The boys played really well … we have a good team chemistry.
“They [Huskies] will be a playoff contender again this year for sure because they only lost three seniors from last year’s team.”
The Riverwhawks then notched a second straight win with a 7-0 blowout win over the Pendleton High Buckaroos (1-3) on Sept. 4. The Riverhawks outshot Pendleton 18-3.
Heredia, Santana (two goals), sophomore midfielder Julian Rodriguez (two assists), Cervantes, junior midfielder Jose Morales and junior forward David Gutierrez each scored goals. Camarillo led the Riverhawks in assists with three. Senior goalkeeper Marcos Meza had two saves.
“We’re hoping to continue our win streak … We don’t like to get too cocky, but I think the boys are playing fairly well. We have pretty much the same team that we had last year except for the three starters,” Granados said. “… Our team looks pretty good and we’re showing very good form so far.”
