HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley (HRV) forced five turnovers — four in the second half — and overcame a 20-6 halftime deficit Sept. 5 to win its 2025 football opener, 35-20, over Reynolds.
The game at Mt. Hood Community College featured some big offensive plays, but the game’s momentum turned in the third quarter behind Hood River’s defense. The Eagles went to a four-man defensive front to put more pressure on Reynold’s quarterback Bodhi Barnes. The junior signal caller teamed with senior Elliot Bruce to stun HRV on some long pass plays in the first half. Bruce had five catches for 179 yards before intermission.
Hood River forced a three-and-out to start the third period and then turned a 14-point deficit into an insurmountable 28-20 lead seven seconds into the final period. The second half opening defensive stand by HRV was led by junior Milo Bielen, who had a tackle for loss and then pressured Barnes into a third-down incompletion.
Hood River scored on its next play from scrimmage. Quarterback Bodie Stuben, making his first varsity start, hit Talon-Quinn Britt on a slant pattern across the middle resulting in a 43-yard touchdown. On the ensuing Reynolds’ possession, Nick Tuttle picked off Barnes — who hurried his throw after avoiding a sack — and Hood River was quickly back in business on offense. Stuben found Davin Snyder on successive completions to loosen up the Reynolds’ defense, and then Bam Layna broke away on a 48-yard touchdown to give HRV the lead for good, 22-20, with 4:10 left in the third period.
Layna finished with 193 rushing yards on 19 carries. He opened HRV’s scoring with a 53-yard touchdown run on the game’s first play from scrimmage. He closed the game’s scoring on a 13-yard pass from Stuben with 90 seconds remaining. Hood River’s other touchdown came on Stuben’s 17-yard TD pass to Deacon Ybarra. The senior bullied his way into the end zone to give HRV a 28-20 lead.
Game notes: Stuben finished 11-for-17 passing for 111 yards. Bielen also forced a fumble which was recovered by Layna in the third period. Snyder and Britt also had interceptions for HRV.
