HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley (HRV) cross country team completed a busy first week of the season Sept. 6, joining nearly 100 high school teams at the unique and challenging course at Hydrangea Ranch outside Tillamook.
The Eagle boys were eighth in the 5A-6A race and senior Syl Perrin finished second overall in the girls individual competition. Perrin was seventh in the same race in 2024.
“We’re really trying to focus on the process goals and not the outcome goals,” HRV’s second-year Coach Laura Haspela said earlier in the week after the Eagles had competed at the NWOC Preview meet (see related story). Haspela said some of those process goals include training workouts, nutrition, sleep, race mindset and other pre-race preparation.
Perrin seems to be well on track with her preparation. The senior finished second behind South Eugene’s Evangeline Johnson-Hess in 19 minutes, 10 seconds — just five seconds off her personal best. Hood River was 14th out of 21 scoring teams.
The Eagle boys were eighth and led by Victor Coffman’s 14th place finish; the senior was 22nd in the 2024 race. Sophomore Joshua Carley was second for HRV in a personal best 17:15, and Copeland Louis was 26th (17:28).
“Every race seems to be different right now as far as who is going to take the lead,” Haspela said. “We’ve got a huge boys team. … There is going to be so much competition for the varsity spots.”
