F. Martin Gibson photoTHE DALLES — For the first time in eight years, The Dalles High School (TDHS) has posted back-to-back 2-0 starts to its football season.
Coach Nate Timmons’ Riverhawks won their second game of the 2025 season 21-7 on Sept. 5 at Molalla (0-1) and take the modest win streak into this week’s contest — a 7 p.m. home game on Sept. 12 against winless Astoria. The Dalles is No. 2 in the latest Oregon Scholastic Activities Association rankings.
The Fisherman’s 0-2 record is somewhat misleading, or at least understandable when considering the competition. Astoria lost 20-17 to North Bend in the season opener for both teams on Aug. 29. Like The Dalles, it wasn’t too long ago that North Bend was a Class 5A school. This past week, 2-0 Stayton High won at Astoria, 27-0. The Eagles were a 4A state quarterfinalist team in 2024 and return 20 upperclassmen with varsity experience from that squad.
Astoria was leading its game against North Bend before the visitors executed a hook-and-lateral play that covered 55 yards over the final nine seconds to pull out the win. Stayton didn’t need such heroics against Astoria in its shutout victory over the Fishermen.
Astoria won, 29-0, at home over The Dalles in 2024.
