Tenacity, banging the boards, and good game management on Saturday night in Portland allowed the HRV girls basketball team to do something it hadn’t been able to do thus far this season: string a pair of wins together — road wins, no less.

To the editor: In her last ’Crosstalk’ offering, Ms. Ricart chose to sing the praises of Ayn Rand. Rand became a darling of the Tea Party who embraced her pseudo philosophy which sought to justify the privilege of the wealthy and demonize not only the lazy, undeserving poor, but the working middle-classes as well.

I would like everyone in the community to know that starting Nov. 1, 2013, supplemental nutritional benefits will be cut for everyone who receives them. The cuts will range from $11 for a single person per month, which is $121 per year to $36 per month for a family of four, which adds up to $396 per year.

Last week we published a letter to the editor, titled “Send them on,” from a community member who complained about the “homeless, transients and panhandlers” in our town and asked why we don’t send them to another city. The letter elicited a spirited discussion on our website as well as a follow-up letter.
