There are regular-season games, and then there are nights hockey fans talk about for years. Sept. 29 in Raleigh could be one of them.
The Carolina Hurricanes will raise their second Stanley Cup championship banner before opening the NHL season against the Florida Panthers at Lenovo Center. For anyone who followed Carolina through a 53-22-7 season and a 16-3 playoff run, this is the night to see the celebration on home ice, surrounded by the people who lived every overtime, every series and every step toward the Cup.
Florida won the Stanley Cup in 2024 and 2025 before Carolina took it in 2026. For a hockey fan, seeing the champions from the past three seasons share the ice on opening night is enough reason to book the trip.
The banner ceremony will last only a few minutes. The better part is the day around it: red jerseys across Raleigh, Caniacs filling the parking lots around Lenovo Center, and and feeling the mood shift as last season's celebration turns into the first game of the next.
Why This Opening Night Is Different
Opening night starts early. Puck drop is set for 5 p.m. ET, and every fan inside Lenovo Center will receive a replica Stanley Cup champions banner before the real one heads to the rafters.
This game will be only the third time in the NHL’s modern era that the two previous Stanley Cup champions have faced each other in a mutual season opener. Florida also ended Carolina’s playoff run in both 2023 and 2025, which gives the first game of the new season a little more bite than the usual September reset.

Carolina enters opening night on a 168-game sellout streak after selling out all 41 regular-season home games and all 10 playoff games last season. For anyone planning the trip, that is reason enough to secure a ticket before worrying about dinner reservations, booking flights or which Raleigh neighborhood to stay in.
Build a Few Days Around the Game
Raleigh-Durham International Airport has a broad nonstop network. Its official destination list includes major gateways such as Atlanta, Boston, Chicago and Dallas-Fort Worth, making a three- or four-night trip relatively straightforward.
Sept. 29 falls on a Tuesday. Arrive over the weekend and use Sunday and Monday for Raleigh’s museums, restaurants and neighborhoods, then save Tuesday afternoon for West Raleigh and Lenovo Center.
“While the main focus will be on the game, the capital of North Carolina has an energy that's perfect for visitors who also like the arts,” said Lonely Planet writer Caroline Eubanks.
Raleigh has just over 506,000 residents, according to the latest U.S. Census estimate. It is the largest city in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill region known as the Research Triangle. Founded in 1792 as North Carolina’s capital, Raleigh still lives up to its City of Oaks nickname, especially in neighborhoods where mature trees soften the edges of downtown and historic streets.
The city also has a more interesting visual identity than the generic Southern capital label suggests. Around downtown, the Greek Revival State Capitol gives way to red-brick warehouses, nightlife along Glenwood South and leafy streets in Historic Oakwood, where Victorian and early-20th-century houses still line entire blocks.
“For a Hurricanes weekend, I’d focus on three main areas: Lenovo Center and West Raleigh for game day, downtown for museums and dining, and Historic Oakwood or Boylan Heights for a more local experience,” said Andrés Serra, head of operations at Optimise Travel.
Stay Near the Arena or Stay in the City
Where you stay depends on whether you want to be close to the arena or closer to the restaurants, museums and neighborhoods that give Raleigh its character.
For a splurge, The Umstead Hotel and Spa occupies 12 wooded acres in nearby Cary, where the lobby feels more like a private gallery than a conventional hotel. A full spa, lake views and dinner at MICHELIN-recognized Herons give the stay enough substance to feel like part of the trip rather than just a place to sleep.
Renaissance Raleigh North Hills is in the middle of one of the city’s busiest dining and shopping districts, an area Hurricanes center Logan Stankoven also names among his favorites. The StateView Hotel, Autograph Collection is closer to NC State, while The Casso works better for travelers who want downtown museums, restaurants and nightlife nearby.
Fans who prioritize game-day convenience can stay closer to Lenovo Center at Four Points by Sheraton Raleigh Arena or Home2 Suites by Hilton Raleigh West Lenovo Center. Downtown travelers should expect roughly a 20-minute drive to the arena.
Staying downtown gives travelers better access to Raleigh’s restaurants and museums, but Lenovo Center requires planning. The arena sits west of downtown, and game-day parking is expensive enough that prepaying matters. Current arena pricing lists general parking at $65 prepaid versus $95 on site, though those rates can change by event.
Where a Hurricane Actually Goes
Stankoven, who joined Carolina in March 2025 and helped the team win the Stanley Cup the following spring, offered a few personal recommendations for Raleigh visitors.
Prime BBQ is one of his favorites for smoked meats. For Italian, he likes Mulino Italian Kitchen downtown and Colletta in Fenton. O-Ku is his pick for sushi, and North Hills is another part of Raleigh he returns to for restaurants and shopping.
Stankoven says UNC, Duke and North Carolina State are all close enough for travelers to catch a college game during a longer stay. Durham is also home to the Bulls for minor league baseball, and golf is hard to avoid in a state Stankoven describes as having courses “galore.”
If the trip stretches beyond Raleigh, Wilmington is about two hours east. Visitors can tour Battleship North Carolina, walk the Wilmington Riverwalk and continue to Wrightsville Beach on the Atlantic coast.
The Hurricanes Head to Helsinki
Opening night is not the only unusual date on Carolina’s calendar. In November, the Hurricanes head to Helsinki for two games against the Seattle Kraken at Veikkaus Arena as part of the NHL Global Series.
Less than two months after the season starts in Raleigh, Carolina’s title defense moves to Helsinki.
