Two-thirds of Americans plan to hand out candy on Halloween, and this year they get to do it on a Saturday night with nobody due at school the next morning. The parents walking the route will be out there a couple of hours with nowhere to be afterward. A folding table in the driveway loaded with food and drinks gives them a reason to stop rather than head home.
Most neighborhoods already have a house where everybody ends up. It’s the one with the wide driveway, the good decorations or the family that owns plenty of folding chairs. There are usually a dozen adults out front holding drinks, half of them neighbors who only wave at each other the rest of the year.
A Saturday changes the math
A weekday Halloween is a scramble: parents get home at 5:30 p.m., cook some frozen chicken nuggets for a quick supper, wrestle everybody into costumes and get out the door before dark. None of that has to be crammed into 90 minutes this year, so the whole evening can have a different structure.
Halloween is not much of a party holiday for most households. Only 32% of Americans plan to throw or attend a party, compared with 66% who hand out candy and the 51% each who dress up and decorate. This year, the people who would hand out candy in their pajamas on a Tuesday are free to make an evening of it instead.
Candy is the one part of the night that has gotten more expensive, since chocolate prices have held steady even with cocoa well off its 2024 peak. Gummies keep taking over more of the trick-or-treat bag as a result. The kids don’t care one bit, but it does take some of the fun out of going through the sack after they’ve crashed in a sugar coma. No parent has ever snuck off with the sour worms. A party out front at least gives the adults something to look forward to.
Make it a potluck
Trick-or-treat night works like a tailgate. One neighbor brings a case of beer, another shows up with chips and a package of cookies from the bakery aisle, and somebody else hands over a spare bag of candy when the bowl runs low.
Getting the word out is the only real organizing involved. A message in the neighborhood chat a few days ahead with a time and an address covers most of it. Anybody who isn’t in the chat can get a note taped to the front door, the same way Boo bags make the rounds in October.
Setting up the driveway
A folding table pushed up near the garage keeps the food out of the way of wagons and strollers, and a couple of clips on the tablecloth will save somebody from chasing it across the yard. Set out plenty of chairs. Grandparents come along to watch, and anybody who has been on their feet since 6 will take one.
String lights across the garage door and a few lanterns on the table provide enough light for people to see what they’re eating. Orange bulbs in the porch fixtures and luminaries down the walk light the way to the driveway and double as decoration. Lots of jack-o’-lanterns set around give a festive, spooky touch. A fog machine near the steps is another nice touch.
Remember the peripherals: a long extension cord for the slow cooker, extra chairs, another table for whatever the neighbors bring and plenty of battery-operated candles.
Keep the menu simple
Everybody likes pizza, and it makes more sense than anything else for an outdoor party. It arrives hot, the boxes stack neatly on a card table and a dad who’s also holding a flashlight and a plastic pumpkin can eat a slice one-handed. Order more than seems necessary. The neighbors who swear they already ate will each grab at least one slice.
Pulled pork is another good option, though it does require planning ahead. Cook the pork butt earlier in the day, then shred it and move it out to a slow cooker in the driveway to keep it warm. Slider buns are easier than plates for people eating while standing, and barbecue sauce and a couple bags of chips round out the meal.
Snacks nobody needs a plate for
Everything else on the table should be finger food. Pimento cheese is a good choice as long as it’s spread on crackers or celery sticks ahead of time and easy to grab in the dark. Sausage balls work well too, since they’re as good an hour out of the oven as they are hot. Add a bowl of spiced pecans and some grapes, and the whole table can be set before the first trick-or-treater rings the bell.
Put out a dessert table
The kids have candy covered, but the adults need something sweet too, and a second table handles it. Brownies, cookies, a pound cake sliced ahead of time and anything else that travels in a pan all work out there. Keep a bowl of candy on that table as well, for the little ones whose bags came up short and the shy sibling who won’t walk up to a stranger’s door.
Something warm to drink
Halloween night is typically cold in most parts of the country, making an outdoor Halloween party a perfect opportunity to serve something warm to drink. A slow-cooker of hot cider or wassail punch with cinnamon sticks, orange slices and a little brown sugar works for kids and adults alike.
Coffee is an excellent addition once the temperature drops. For the cold drinks, a cooler by the garage door holds beer, a couple bottles of wine and plenty of water for the kids. Add some plastic cups and set out a marker so people can write their names on the side.Â
By nightfall, there’s a Superman cape abandoned on the ground next to a twinkling princess wand. The food is almost gone, and nobody’s in a hurry to leave, which is always the sign of a good party.
