THE GORGE — Hundreds gathered at Westside Elementary for this year’s El Día del Inmigrante (Day of the Immigrant) community celebration Dec. 14. This international observance has been coordinated by Comunidades since 2021, and teamed up with Hood River Latino Network for this year’s event, said Comunidades Executive Director Ubaldo Hernández.
“On this day, we honor and celebrate the invaluable contributions of countless migrants worldwide,” said Martha “Tita” Verduzco, Hood River Latino Network. “These individuals often bridge cultures, maintaining strong ties to their homelands while enriching their adopted communities with diverse perspectives, experiences, and skills.”
Comunidades is a social and environmental justice organization working to improve “Latino participation and leadership in the Columbia River Gorge through leadership development and civic participation” (comunidades.org); Hood River Latino Network is an “organization that defends the rights of immigrants an promotes social justice for all” (hoodriverlatino.org).
Participating organizations included Columbia Cascade Housing, Hood River County School District, Rotary Club, One Community Health, CAT / Link, Mid-Columbia Children’s Council, and Oregon Food Bank. Before pursuing resource booths, breaking open piñatas, and dancing, participants enjoyed food from Tacos Los Compadres, White Salmon.
In short, El Día del Inmigrante is an opportunity to recognize the contributions immigrants make to the Gorge community and a show of spirit and strength.

We are committed to advocating for your well-being and supporting your journey, ensuring access to essential services such as healthcare, nutrition, education, and other vital resources.”
