Why should residents consider you for Dufur School District position 3?

I’ve served on the Dufur School Board since the early 1980s, dedicating over 40 years to supporting our students, staff, and community. My experience includes participation in three major remodel and bond projects, helping establish both the Jerri Walker DePriest Endowment Fund (JWD) and the Ranger Pride Education Foundation (RPEF). I’ve also served on several other local boards which reflects my broader commitment to our town’s well-being. I understand the history, strengths, and needs of this district, and I’m committed to ensuring it continues to serve our youth with excellence.

What do you see as the school district’s greatest challenge going forward?

The upcoming leadership transition — with the retirement of our superintendent — will be one of our most significant challenges. With change comes uncertainty, but also opportunity. My decades of board experience and in-depth understanding of school operations and budgeting put me in a strong position to help guide the district through this time with continuity and confidence. Ensuring a smooth transition, maintaining focus on student learning, and preserving the culture of trust and collaboration will be key to our success.

What changes do you think the district needs to make to any of its policies, and why?

While our core policies are generally sound, ongoing review and refinement are essential. We must continue evaluating how our policies address emerging student needs. We also need to ensure our policies support a learning environment that is inclusive, respectful, and responsive to the voices of students, parents, and staff. Being proactive, rather than reactive, helps us stay ahead of the curve while honoring our community’s values.

How will you support the district’s mission of “In partnership, we are dedicated to educational excellence and lifelong learning, emphasizing communication, trust, and respect”?

I believe this mission reflects exactly what Dufur is about — working together to create the best possible future for our students. I’ll continue supporting this mission by encouraging strong partnerships between families, educators, and the community. Communication, trust, and respect aren’t just words — they’re values I’ve lived throughout my board service. Whether it’s by attending events, listening to concerns, or making informed decisions based on what’s best for students, I will remain a consistent, committed presence dedicated to Dufur’s future.
