At the March program meeting, Meyer Memorial Trust’s board of trustees awarded two grants totaling approximately $313,000 to nonprofit organizations in the Columbia Gorge.
Next Door Inc., based in Hood River, was awarded $122,508 to expand its programs to provide small business development services to the Latino community.
Hood River-based Gorge Grown Food Network was awarded $190,498 to strengthen the regional food system in the Columbia Gorge.
Gorge Grown Food Network is the newest grantee in MMT’s focused funding program in food systems work, via education, networking of farmers and a variety of community farmers markets that run from May to November throughout the Gorge.
The program’s goal is to help communities build sustainable local and regional food systems that increase residents’ access to locally grown food, improves health, and provides increased economic opportunity.
These grants bring the total amount awarded in the Columbia Gorge since Meyer Memorial Trust began operating in 1982 to nearly $6.3 million.
Meyer Memorial Trust is one of the largest private foundations in Oregon, with assets of approximately $707 million. The board of trustees — which includes Debbie Craig, John Emrick, Orcilia Zúñiga Forbes, George Puentes and Gerry Pratt — meets monthly to make grants.
