Much is made of the accomplishments of chimpanzees, crows, dolphins and other large animals with advanced cognitive abilities that allow them to make and use various “tools” in procurement of food and other purposes. I was surprised to find that beavers are not included on the list. I suppose it can be argued that using their prodigious teeth as tools doesn’t count as “tool making.” But It turns out beavers are on the far more exclusive list of species that intentionally modify and manage their living environment. We humans (and some insects) are the only other animal species on that quite exclusive list.
