“In 2011, waterman Steve Gates and his team at Big Winds brought the Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge to life in Hood River,” said a press release. “Since then, the Gorge Challenge has evolved and become one of the most beloved community watersport events and competitive downwind races in the country.”
Hood River local and three-time SUP World Champion Fiona Wylde told Columbia Gorge News that she is planning to compete, but which discipline is to be determined.
“This year, the event is returning to its grassroots and community connection to bring people of all water sports experiences and levels together,” Wylde said. “The name change from Gorge Paddle Challenge to Gorge Challenge really stands out to including not just SUP, but to include wingfoil and downwind foil as well.”
Last year, she began a nonprofit to teach students about water safety. Wylde, Wind & Water will kickoff the Gorge Challenge by hosting a free minicamp on Aug. 15 for kids aged 6-18. “While Wylde, Wind & Water is not organizing the Gorge Challenge, we are organizing a free kids event called Fiona Friday Funday prior to the racing on the weekend,” she said. The event will include games, stand up paddling races, and prizes for kids, open to those aged 6-18. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
All equipment is provided for free, including stand up paddle boards, life jackets, and paddles. Wylde said there is no prior registration, and if your child is interested, show up early to check-in.
