THE GORGE — CGOA’s 20th Anniversary Season will feature concerts from each of its ensembles, all with an appeal to new and returning audiences.
The party kicks off on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at The Ruins, as the Jazz Collective Big Band joins forces with the North Portland Big Band for a concert called A Swing Summit: Two Bands, One Night.
Like the CGOA Jazz Collective, the NoPo Big Band is a hard-swinging ensemble that plays with jazz classics and modern arrangements. Tickets at gorgeorchestra.org.
The Jazz Collective Big Band concert is the first of a season-long series of concerts by the Big Band, and, the Gorge Sinfonietta, Voci Community Choir and Stages Musical Theatre. Highlights include November’s Sinfonietta’s Collage of three cello concerto movements played by local cellists, Voci’s annual Winter Concert and a combined Sinfonietta and Voci concert series in April. The Jazz Collective will play concerts and dances around the Gorge.
The season ends with two local pianists. Kathy Apland will play in the Ravel Piano Concerto, and Mitchell Jett Spencer returns to play Rachmaninoff’s romantic Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The concert is also the finale for CGOA founder, Artistic Director Emeritus and Sinfonietta conductor Mark Steighner.
