WHITE SALMON — Superintendent Rich Polkinghorn gave the White Salmon Valley School District (WSVSD) board an update on a recent work trip attended by himself and six staff members at the July 23 meeting.
As previously reported by Columbia Gorge News, AVID — or Advancement Via Individual Determination — is a nationally recognized program that focuses on equipping students with critical thinking, collaboration, organization, and self-advocacy skills. It aims to inspire students to pursue higher education and careers, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.
Kelly Hume, Trisha Eddy, Jenny Hallead, William Gross, Matthew Changar, and Amy Sacquety joined Polkinghorn in Anaheim for three days of learning and planning. “While most of the team was from Columbia High School, we also included Trisha and Matt as we began thinking about how AVID can grow into our lower grade levels over time,” he said.
The team spent much of the conference focused on Columbia High School’s incoming freshman and developing plans to help more students finish their first year of high school on track for graduation. Polkinghorn said AVID is expanding to grades 9-10 this coming school year, with AVID strategies taught across classrooms.
“I'm excited about where AVID is headed in White Salmon,” Polkinghorn concluded. “We have a great team leading this work, and I think we're building something that will have a lasting impact on our students."
