Columbia High senior Samuel Lachino was one of the Trico Division's most closely marked players during the 2006 boys soccer season.
Dangerous with and without the ball, Lachino preoccupied opposing defenses while leading the Bruins to a school single-season record of 13 victories and their third consecutive Class 2A tournament appearance.
Unfortunately, a broken foot suffered during Columbia's winner-to-state district playoff win against Montesano sidelined Lachino for the Bruins' first-round match versus Port Townsend.
Still, the midfielder finished the season as CHS's top playmaker (12 assists) and fourth-leading scorer (8 goals).
Lachino's play during the regular season, especially during league matches, earned him the respect of Trico coaches, who named him to their All-Trico first team for the second time in three years.
CHS teammate Lazaro (Chuy) Ramos, a sophomore defender in his first full season of varsity competition, joined Lachino on the 11-man first team. Ramos was a key player in a stingy CHS defense that posted a school single-season record 10 shutouts and held opponents to less than a goal a game (16 goals in 17 matches in 2006)
The second team included CHS seniors Demetrio Sanchez, a forward, and Jesus (Chuy) Mendoza, a midfielder, both for the first time. When they were sophomores, Sanchez and Mendoza received honorable mention.
CHS's honorable mention selections this season were sophomore forward Martin Mendoza, sophomore midfielder Cheno Barajas and junior midfielder Roberto Rodriguez.
Trico's top individual awards went to Ridgefield senior midfielder Tyler Salvey (offensive player of the year), Hockinson junior defender Curtis James (defensive player of the year) and Hockinson head coach Vic Denning (coach of the year).
The lone team honor, for sportsmanship, was awarded to Trico champion Ridgefield.
Midfielders: Jesus (Chuy) Mendoza, sr., Columbia-White Salmon; Colin Strand, sr., Stevenson; Barry Carr, sr., Ridgefield; Max Stephens, sr., Ridgefield.
Defenders: Oscar Sosa, sr., Stevenson; Andrew Wolf, sr., Hockinson; Aaron Kearsley, jr., Ridgefield.
