Collegiate Track & Field:
Purdue University javelin specialist Lindsey Blaine qualified for her third straight NCAA championships during the May 26-27 Mideast Regional Meet in Knoxville, Tenn.
Blaine, a junior from Lyle, recorded a personal-best throw of 165 feet, 7 inches during the competition--a mark that earned her third place and an automatic berth to the 25th annual Women's Division I Outdoor Championships, which run June 7-10 in Sacramento, Calif.
Blaine's contemporaries, Jenna Dean of Washington State and Eastern Washington's Jordan Baughan, came up short in their attempts to qualify for the NCAA championships.
Dean, a senior from Glenwood and the WSU record-holder (169-7), placed sixth at the NCAA West Regional Meet, held May 26-27 in Provo, Utah. Her best effort--156 feet, 11 inches--came on her first of six throws.
Dean, who graduated in May with a degree in human development, was fifth after the preliminary round but slipped to sixth after the finals. She missed qualifying for her second national meet by one place.
Baughan, a junior from Klickitat, finished eighth at regionals. Her top mark was 152-11, on her second of six throws.
However, like Dean, she failed to qualify for a second consecutive trip to nationals.
Outdoor Recreation:
Jim Denton will lead the Klickitat Trail Conservancy's last hike of the spring--from Fisher Hill Bridge to Pitt--this Sunday, June 11.
"This is a very scenic river walk," a KTC spokesman said about what hikers can expect to experience on the eight-mile route.
Anyone interested in joining the hike should be at the Lyle Trailhead (west of the SR 14-SR 142 junction) at 8:30 a.m.
