EUGENE — Hood River Valley High School senior thrower Sebastian Barajas couldn’t have asked for a better start to his trip to Hayward Field for the 5A track and field state championships.
The Dalles track and field team posted 12 top-5 finishes, including 10 from the girls’ team, against 6A and 5A competition Friday at the East County Classic held at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham. Kayla Seibel had the best outcome for the girls, taking third place in the triple jump with a leap of 31-feet-1.5 inches, Avery Cardosi added a fourth in the long jump at 16-1.25 and sophomore standout Bailey Nearing hit a career-best in the 400-meters with a final time of one minute and 7.5 seconds.

The annual Hershey’s Track Meet brought several dozen youngsters to Hood River Valley High School’s Henderson Stadium last weekend to compete for a shot at the state meet this summer at Eugene’s legendary track and field venue, Hayward Field.
With an opportunity to shine in a high-level meet against 50 other schools, the Dufur Rangers sent four athletes to Willamette University Saturday for the annual Meet of Champions in Salem and had three amass top-10 honors, and two set personal records.
