With an opportunity to shine in a high-level meet against 50 other schools, the Dufur Rangers sent four athletes to Willamette University Saturday for the annual Meet of Champions in Salem and had three amass top-10 honors, and two set personal records.
“We had a very good weekend,” said Dufur head coach Connie Harvey.
State placer Taylor Darden put her name in two events – the shotput and discus – and finished as high as second place in the shotput with a toss of 36-feet, six inches, just 11 inches short of her personal record, but her best throw of the spring.
Her 36-06 was less than three feet behind 3A Nyssa’s Melissa Ausman (39-03).
The sophomore turned heads in the discus event, where she shattered her previous best distance, of 110-02 set on April 28, 2012 with a top marker of 112-11.
Ausman (139-11) won that event as well, but Darden’s distance was less than five feet from second place.
On the boy’s side, Jake Little, Austin Olson and Brandon Thenell hit the track in the shotput and javelin.
Little left the field in his wake for the javelin event where he placed 10th, but his best throw sailed 145-01, a record by nearly 7 feet.
Olson made a throw of 40-10 for 17th place and Thenell, a senior, placed 24th in the same shotput event with his 37-00.50.
After setting a personal record of 42-03 at the Mullen-Leavitt Event last month and following that with a 41-06, Olson hit marks of 40-09 and 38-04 before Saturday’s resurgent toss.
Dufur next hits the track along with South Wasco County for the River’s Edge Invitational Meet at 1 p.m. Friday in Umatilla, 1 p.m.
