Prep Gymnastics:
Jessica Strain of White Salmon placed second in the all-around and helped Stevenson defeat Camas, 151.6 to 143.65, in dual meet action on Jan. 12 in Stevenson.
Strain's overall score of 32.6 points was second to the 35.15 posted by Camas' Shawn Whitefield, who won all four events.
Strain's best finish was second on the uneven bars with a score of 7.7. She also took third in the vault (8.2) and third in the floor exercise (8.4), and fourth on the balance beam (8.3).
Kaitlyn Richards of Stevenson had two second-place efforts--in the vault and on the beam--and came in third in the all-around with a total of 31.7.
On Jan. 8, Strain placed sixth in the all-around during a four-team meet at Goldstar Gym in Vancouver.
Competing against gymnasts from 4A schools Evergreen, Skyview and Hudson's Bay, Strain scored a personal record of 8.8 in the floor exercise, which was good for sixth place.
She also noted eighth-place finishes on the bars, the beam and in the vault, helping Stevenson take third in the team competition.
Youth Basketball:
The annual Knights of Columbus free-throw competition will take place Saturday, Jan. 22, at Wy'east Middle School in Odell, from 1-4 p.m. The hoop shoot is open to all youth ages 10-14 from either Hood River County or Bingen/White Salmon.
First-place winners in each age group will win trophies, and will also qualify for the district hoop shoot on Feb. 12, also at Wy'east.

Nordic Skiing:
Come enjoy a winter morning at Mt. Adams during the 5-mile (8km) "Big Tree Ski" cross-country ski race on Saturday, Jan. 29.
The free event is open to both competitive racers and those wishing to ski at a more relaxed pace. The course is a loop trail for classic diagonal stride skiing. The race is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m., with registration beginning at 9.
Participants are asked to meet at the Pineside Sno-Park, six miles north of Trout Lake. Vehicles must have a Sno-Park permit. For information call (509) 395-2617.
Snowshoeing:
A free, guided snowshoe walk through the Trout Lake Preserve will be held Saturday, Jan. 29. Wildlife biologists will lead the two-hour walk through this outstanding natural resource area.
Participants are asked to meet at the Mt. Adams Ranger District parking lot at 10 a.m.
Organizers of the walk note a limited number of snowshoes will be available to borrow on a first-come basis for those who don't own a pair. For information call (509) 395-2318.
