This month the focus is on goals. The whole community is looking forward to the start of the basketball season. Going to the games offers our community members entertainment and excitement, as well as an opportunity to visit over a hotdog and a pop or just a chance to stay in touch with each other at the end of a busy day. 2003-04 promises to be another fast-paced season and I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing what this year's teams will do. Both the girls and boys teams are in the rebuilding mode as a result of some key losses of players who graduated last year, but these young people show a lot of promise and have so much potential that this season should be very successful. Come out and support the school and cheer them on. And, if you're a brave soul, try your luck at the pop shoot at halftime. We promise not to laugh if you miss your free throw. We admire your willingness to risk humiliation and we'll cheer loudly if you make it. And, don't forget the Pee Wee's halftime scrimmage. We take our basketball seriously here in Klickitat and the kids start learning the sport practically as soon as they can run up and down the court. It's always a wildly wonderful experience to watch these adorable whippets compete, too. Come and watch. You'll be glad you did.
In addition to making basketball goals, the Klickitat Community Council is spearheading the formation of a specific Klickitat Revitalization Task Force as a result of our recent community goal setting and vision meetings. There was such a great response from the community members this past year at these brainstorming sessions, that we are now putting together a group of dedicated people to see that those ideas get put into action and to help our community goals become a reality. The purpose of forming this task force is to have some committed and talented volunteers actively work on getting various projects off the ground and headed for successful completion. The task force meetings will be scheduled soon and information will be made available shortly.
Thanksgiving is fast approaching and once again, I would like to remind everyone to please keep the military personnel from our communities in your prayers. For some of these young people, this is their first holiday season away from home and some of them are a very long way away, serving in war zones and in difficult situations. Please remember them and their families and give thanks for their dedication and willingness to make that sacrifice for all of us.
Please note: The Klickitat Community Council normally meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, but due to the upcoming holidays and an EDA meeting in January, we will be meeting only on the second Wednesdays in November, December and January. In February, we should be back to our normal twice-monthly meeting schedule.
The school board meets on the fourth Tuesday each month at 7 p.m. in the school. The fire department meets on the first and third Wednesdays at the fire hall. The fire commissioners meet the second Thursday of each month. So, if you want to be involved in making Klickitat a safer and better place for all of us to live, please come and join in.
