Before the Bingen-White Salmon Police Department starts issuing citations for illegal parking on the south side of downtown Jewett Boulevard next month, Police Chief Tracy Wyckoff is hoping motorists will have adapted to the city’s new back-in angle parking policy.
“We’re going through a transition,” Wyckoff told the City Council last Wednesday during his semi-weekly report. “Backing is a lost skill. It’s going to take time for people to adapt.”
The grace period, however, for motorists who illegally park nose-first on the southside of Jewett will end on July 31.
“On August first, we will start issuing citations,” Wyckoff advised, and noted, “It’s not about the revenue; it’s about making things safer for the citizens.”
Wyckoff said he has observed that the visibility around 1st Avenue has improved and motorists are seeing pedestrians and on-coming traffic sooner because of back-in parking.
Councilor Jason Sabourin voiced his support for the back-in parking policy and enforcement of it when necessary. The penalty for illegal parking in White Salmon is $50.
“I’d much rather have people worrying about getting a ticket than worrying about getting in an accident,” he said.
Wyckoff said he had gotten feedback from the public of the need for some additional signage on the south side to fill in gaps between the already posted signs.
Public Works Operations Mana-ger Kevin English cautioned again-st erecting too many signs, lest the city contribute to visual pollution.
The city’s effort to prevent U-turns downtown got an assist this week from the Washington State Department of Transportation, when WSDOT painted an 18-inch wide, solid yellow stripe down the middle of Jewett.
According to English, per state law, it is illegal for motorists to cross an 18-inch solid yellow. The previous double-yellow that used to split Jewett into north and south sides only prohibited passing.
