Chelsea Marr photo/fileColumbia High sophomore Lilah Zimmerman was the individual winner and also led her Bruin teammates to first place at the team’s season-opening cross country meet Sept. 10 on Strawberry Island in North Bonneville.
Zimmerman won the 5,000-meter race in 21 minutes, 45 seconds, as the Bruins scored 27 team points in the four-school varsity race. Coach Michael Hannigan’s runners finished in two bunches behind Zimmerman, who beat runner-up Daisy Jones of Stevenson by 27 seconds.
The first pack of Bruin runners included Kathryn O’Connor (third, 22:38), Helen Hoskins (fourth, 23:22) and Heidi Hoppus (fifth, 23:48). The second group — 14th through 17th — was made up of Maisy Kollman, Maya Tama, Raina McAllister, and Eda O’Connor.
The boys competition was much closer. Columbia scored 37 points and was boosted by its team depth to finish ahead of Seton Catholic (42 points), King’s Way Christian (47), and Stevenson (104). Columbia’s scoring runners (top five on the team) were: Noah Slayton (third, 19:03); Cole Wooding (fifth, 19:18); Jack Brooks (eighth, 19:39); Colby Clark (10th, 19:52); and Luther Thomas (11th, 19:54).
