It would take 13 games for the HRV softball team to get its first taste of a loss this season.
On April 14, the HRV softball team traveled to Hermiston for a double header with the Bulldogs.
HRV opened the day with a dominant 15-7 victory, moving to 13-0 on the season and opening Columbia River Conference play 1-0 with the victory.
The Eagles found themselves down 5-1 through the first three innings of this game, but in the fourth and fifth innings would put together a total of five runs to take a 6-5 lead heading into the sixth inning.
In the sixth, HRV stole the show.
HRV scored nine runs in the top of the sixth to take a commanding 15-5 lead.
Kaylin Winans, Haylee Baker, Zoe Munn, Makenzie Chambers and Hannah McNerney each had RBIs in the big inning for the Eagles; Winans also hit her second homerun of the season.
Munn and Winans led the way for the Eagles offensively in game one, driving in four runs each.
Haylee and Morgan Baker, Lauren Decker, McNerney, Annalee Anglin, Chambers, and Emilie Ellifritz each had one of the Eagle’s 15 total RBIs.
On the mound for the Eagles in game one was McNerney.
McNerney came away with the victory as she allowed seven runs on seven hits over seven innings, striking out nine.
McNerney is 7-0 on the season and has 67 total strikeouts to lead the team.
In game two of the double header, the Eagles were up 6-3 heading into the sixth inning.
However, it would be the Hermiston bats this time around that got things going in the sixth.
Hermiston notched in two singles, a double and a sacrifice fly during their five-run sixth inning to take an 8-6 lead over the Eagles heading into the final inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Eagles had a runner in scoring position with two out, but were unable to get back into this game and the Eagles would lose their first game of the season by a final score 8-6.
Despite the loss, the Eagles are off to a 13-1 start, a program best.
In the Eagles’ loss, Decker was on the mound. She surrendered eight runs on 11 hits over five and a third innings, striking out two and walking one.
McNerney led the Eagles offensively with two RBIs. Haylee Baker, Winans and Munn each had one RBI.
HRV racked up nine hits, with Lizzie Weekly and Winans leading the way with two hits each.
The Eagles saw the Bulldogs once again on Tuesday, April 17 at home (results unavailable at press time).
Next up for HRV is a home double header against Pendleton on Saturday, April 21. The first game is scheduled to start at noon, second game at 1:30 p.m. at Westside Elementary.
