Nearly a dozen people representing the Gorge not only competed in, but survived the Pac West Spartan Sprint Race in Washoughal earlier this month, enduring a “race” that was really more like a sadistic obstacle course.
The race was held at Washougal Motorcross Park and in addition to the four-mile run itself, also featured a litany of obstacles and challenges to slow down participants, similar to other popular obstacle course race series such as the Tough Mudder. The 11 competitors from the Gorge, running under the name “Team Adrenaline,” had to climb over obstacles, crawl under barbed wire, throw spears at targets and other challenges or face a physical penalty such as performing burpees: dropping from a standing position into a squatting position with your hands on the ground, kicking your feet back while keeping your arms extended, returning your feet to the squat position, and then jumping up from that position.
Last year, Team Adrenaline finished second overall, with many of the same individual members. While team results haven’t yet been posted, individual results have and three of the team’s competitors placed in the top 100 finishers in a field that boasted an incredible 4,367 participants. All members of the team placed within the top half of the race. Last year, Team Adrenaline, which was composed of about half of the same members that made up this year’s team, placed second overall in the race.
Taking the top spot on the team this year was Logan Davis, who finished in 16th place, completing the course in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 50 seconds. He was less than 40 seconds removed from landing in the top 10 and approximately 12 minutes behind the race winner.
Also in the top 100 for Team Adrenaline were Kyle Turner, who placed 60th with a time of 1:08:23 and Tim Saur, who placed 95th with a time of 1:12:25.
Other racers for Team Adrenaline included Stacy Claus (297th), Renae McClung (389th), Trey Schilling (582nd), Jeff Irwin (1,247th), Craig Holloway (1,249th), Todd Walter (1,366th), Brody Schilling (2,008th) and Kayla Schilling (2,023rd).
