The Dalles High Riverhawks opened their football non-league schedule with a 20-6 win at Class 3A Umatilla High on Aug. 30.
The Riverhawks took a 7-0 first quarter advantage when senior running back Julian Moorehouse (14 carries, 175 yards rushing) scored on a 52-yard run. The Dalles junior placekicker London Leitz kicked the extra point for a 7-0 The Dalles lead.
The Riverhawks increased their lead in the second quarter when junior Joshua Brackenbury (seven carries, 31 yards rushing) scored on an eight-yard run. The Vikings scored a touchdown to trim the Riverhawk lead to 14-6 at halftime. Brackenbury scored on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter, which was followed by a Leitz PAT.
The Riverhawks, guided by first-year Coach Nate Timmons, held the Vikings to 89 yards of offense. The Riverhawks amassed 296 yards.
“It was definitely a successful start to the season for us,” said Timmons. “I thought our quarterback Leighton Voodre did a good job of making reads and the passes he threw were very good. I’m excited to see how much we can improve this week, and we’ll see what we can do in our home opener on Friday.”
Senior quarterback Voodre was 8-for-17 passing for 102 yards). Senior Trace Larson (two catches, 29 yards) and junior Zak Greene (four catches, 44 yards) were his main targets.
The Riverhawks host LaPine 7 p.m. Friday in a nonleague game on Sid White Field at the Wahtonka campus.
