The Dalles High Riverhawks recorded a second straight nonleague boys soccer win, 8-0, over visiting La Grande High on Sept. 10 at the Wahtonka campus.
The Riverhawks have matches this week versus two more 2023 state playoff teams: Sept. 17 at Tillamook and Sept. 19 vs. Seaside. The Riverhawks’ grueling schedule includes six consecutive games versus 2023 playoff squads.
The Riverhawks, guided by fourth-year Coach Jesus Granados, scored two goals in the opening 17 minutes versus La Grande. In the 11th minute, senior midfielder Anthony Santana scored from 12 yards. Six minutes later, senior midfielder Hulises Najera fired in a shot from 18 yards out.
“I think La Grande lost a lot of their starters from last year’s squad, so they have kind of a young team. It was awesome to see lots of goals scored and we have a good group of boys who provide us with lots of options in our attacking offensive formations," Granados said.
Senior forward Hulises Najera and junior Angel Morales also scored first half goals, while sophomore forward Orlando Heredia scored on a shot from eight yards away three minutes into the second half. Sophomore forward Jose Gutierrez scored in the 50th minute; senior Marcos Quiroz and Najera added goals as the Riverhawks reached the 8-0 Mercy Rule and the contest ended in the 59th minute.
Granados, who led the Riverhawks to second place in the 2023 Tri-Valley Conference (TVC) standings, said his team has a good chance to win the conference title this year. “We’ll have to play tough against Madras [defending TVC champion] though to win the league, because they’re considered as one of the top contenders, too,” he said.
The Riverhawks outshot La Grande, 20-7, including five shots that hit the crossbar. The Dalles junior goalkeeper Marcos Meza made five saves.
La Grande, guided by third-year Coach Kaleb Rainsberry, suffered its third straight loss. La Grande has also lost four consecutive games to the Riverhawks, including nonleague losses from 2021 through 2024.
“We have some young guys playing in different positions which are very demanding spots for them,” said Rainsberry. “We’ve also played some very good teams recently and it has been a big challenge for us up front, but hopefully we can turn things around soon and get a win.”
