THE DALLES — The No. 11-ranked Dalles High Riverhawks, who won four of seven non-league volleyball matches, will have a week off from competition before starting conference matches.
The Riverhawks lost their latest non-league match Sept. 16, 3-1, at No. 3-ranked Pendleton (7-2). The Riverhawks, guided by third-year Coach Teresa Morris, were led offensively by sophomore outside hitter Jazzy Morris-Holmes with 21 kills against the Buckaroos.
“Pendleton is definitely one of the top teams in the state this year, so that was a good game for us to play,” said Coach Morris. “We just made too many errors on our side that made it difficult for us to win the match. We did some good things, though, and we know what we need to work on to help our team to improve and that’s what we’re doing in practice. The next time we come up against a top team like Pendleton, we’ll be ready for the challenge.”
The Riverhawks started their eight-game Tri-Valley Conference schedule with three games in five days, including a Sept. 23 league opener versus Madras (1-0 TVC, 3-7 overall).
“The girls deserved to have a little bit of a break after the Pendleton game,” said Morris. “We’ve done a lot of traveling to compete in early season tournaments and we have some distance drives to some of our other games, as well. I think we’ll have a good chance to win our first two league games.”
The Riverhawks play Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. at Gladstone (0-1 TVC, 3-6 overall). The Riverhawks have won six consecutive matches against the Gladiators, overlapping the past three years by 3-0 scores.
Morris-Holmes (Teresa’s daughter) leads the Riverhawk offense with 90 kills. Senior middle blocker Cleo Corbin has 41 kills and junior middle blocker Evelyn Rogers has 21.
“Cleo has really been hitting well, and she’s been blocking very good, too,” said Morris. “With Cleo, Jazzy and Evelyn, we definitely have three powerful hitting players on our team, which is very helpful. As long as we come out and continue playing like we know we should be able to do, then I think we’ll have some good results in our upcoming league games.”
