THE DALLES - The Dalles summer swim team competed in its second event on the USA Swimming/Oregon Swimming Inc. (OSI) schedule June 19-21 at the Prineville Invitational meet at the Crook County Parks and Recreation Center in Prineville.
The Dalles swim team, guided by fifth-year Coach Ann Goodman, had an outstanding performance on the boys team by the Lawrence brothers - Holten, Houstin and Harlan - who were multiple winners.
“The Lawrence brothers dominated in their age group divisions and our age 10 and under swimmers helped carry the team as far as we could go in the point standings,” said Goodman. “Holten Lawrence is also competing in two summer sports as he’s also on The Dalles Little League all-star baseball team, too. Our boys team finished in a solid second place at the meet.”
Harlan Lawrence won seven events in the boys age 12 and under division, including the 100-meter individual medley (1 minute, 54.28 seconds), 25-meter free (20.67), 50 breast (1:01.88), 25 fly (26.21), 25 breast (30.12) and the 50 free (45.74). Holten Lawrence won two events in the age 12 and under class - the 100 free (1:18.19) and the 100 back (1:26.53). Houstin Lawrence won two events in the boys age 10 and under class - the 25 back (37.57) and the 25 free (29.32).
Prineville took first place in the eight-team boys meet, scoring 680 points, followed by The Dalles in second at 346.
“Everyone did a great job, particularly the younger kids (12 and under) who really helped carry our team since they scored lots of points,” said Goodman. “We had lots of new swimmers who did really, really well, so it was fun to watch them, too.”
The Dalles has four boys who have qualified for the OSI 12U Long Course State Championship meet July 10-12 at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton. Those swimmers include Harlan and Holten Lawrence, Sebastian Powell and Elijah Bachman. Maili Doty (girls age 13 and over) has qualified for the OSI Age 13 and over state meet July 23-26 in Beaverton.
Other swimmers on The Dalles’ 26-member squad, who also had standout performances in the pool, included Roxie Miles, Clark Easling, Bryden Denney, Julia Miles, Violet Miles and Benji Koltfarber. It marked the first swim meet this year for these younger members of The Dalles swim team.
Goodman said: “It was a short course meet at Prineville, so it was just perfect for some of our first-year swimmers. I’m really looking forward to our next meet at Pendleton.”
The Dalles swim team will compete in its third OSI summer swim meet July 4-5 at Pendleton.
