Tim Furlong and Joyce Ebersole took top honors over the last few weeks at Orchard Lanes, as you’ll read in this combined report from league action in the last week of January and the first week of February.
Jan. 26-31: Tim Furlong played a starring role at Hood River’s Orchard Lanes to close out January with a spectacular display of bowling prowess in the Monday night Industrial league. Tim notched his first ever career scratch 700 three game series. He scattered the sticks to the tune of big 266 and 245 games ending up with a spiffy 713 set that was a whopping 188 pins over his average. That first 700 is always memorable and it sure feels good to climb over that magical mark.
The inimitable Len Hickman, who has been a long time Orchard Lanes mainstay and a true ambassador of the great game of bowling, displayed some of his old time moxie in the Wednesday afternoon senior Colts and Fillies league where he rolled a super scratch 675 series.
Our next two hot shots are making their first appearance on the Team of the Week this season. Grabbing the big hitter slot is none other than the gregarious lefty John Miller, who was “in the zone” during the Colts and Fillies where logged a nice scratch 202 game and 569 series that was 131 pins over his average.
Our clean-up man is Jason DeGeus, who blasted a mighty fine scratch 728 set in the Wednesday night Fraternal league which was 128 pins over his rapidly climbing average. He’s going to have to shoot some really monstrous numbers to make the big five in the future because his average is going sky high but he’s got the talent do it! Finally, our anchor man on the Team of the Week is none other than the ubiquitous Ray Sollman. Ray is quite simply an institution in bowling at Orchard Lanes and in Hood River. He’s been at the lanes forever and this marks his second appearance on the big five this season. He punched out a nifty scratch 213 game in the Colts and Fillies ending up 120 pins over his average for the session!
Feb. 2-6: Len Hickman is an institution in Hood River; he has been in a bit of a slump on the maples this season, but for the past couple of weeks he’s bowled like he graduated back from the senior tour to the regular tour. Len put on a display of old time veteran bowling savvy in last week’s league action at Hood River’s Orchard Lanes. He started in the Monday night Industrial league by rolling a mighty fine scratch 639 series that was capped by a nice 246 game. That effort was 96 pins over his average. Then, in the Wednesday afternoon senior Colts and Fillies league, he fashioned a solid scratch 619 set, which was 85 pins over his average. Apparently, just getting warmed up, Len saved his best performance for last. In the Wednesday evening Fraternal league he really got hot, notching a huge scratch 287 game and finishing up with a super scratch 672 series which was 141 pins over his average, the most at the lanes last week.
Joyce Ebersole has also been on a roll lately. She just missed making the team of the week last time by one single lonely pin. Her left handed slants stayed on the money last week and she didn’t miss this time, beating her average by 112 pins in the Colts and Fillies to take the second spot on the team of the week.
Randy Nieto takes the third slot on our fab five this week after a sterling outing in the Industrial where he painted the town with a lofty scratch 656 set that was 107 pins over his average.
It’s always a pleasure to welcome a new face to stardom and that’s just what we’re going to do now for Rita Schneeberg. Rita was a strike machine, terminating the ten pins with her every shot on her way to a beautiful scratch 213 game in the Thursday County league last week. She ended up 87 pins over her average for the three game session, good enough to grab the clean-up spot on the team of the week.
And, finally, how about this for an anomaly, Nancy Asai, one of our best women bowlers made the team of the week for the first time this season after splashing the sticks with her usual talented aplomb in the Tuesday Nite Mixed league. Nancy notched a sparkling scratch 663 set that was 84 pins over her average to grab the anchor slot on our big five. It’s much more difficult for our high average bowlers to beat their averages by a margin great enough to make the team of the week.
