Silky-smooth Jeremy Bloom is the latest kegler at Hood River’s Orchard Lanes to climb over the 700 series barrier with a mighty fine 714 that he racked up in the Tuesday Nite Mixed league. This tall total comes as no real surprise; Jeremy has been one of our best for several years now so we expect big things like this from him. Jeremy’s fluid style makes things look so easy, and with a game like his he’ll have a long career in tenpins since there is very little wear and tear on his body, unlike the big crankers we often see in the modern game who try to emulate the pro power players.
Bloom’s fine outing was capped by a pin-smashing 263 game; he is now carrying a heady 222 average, which is one heck of a start to the new season.
Bloom is a high-average bowler, so even with his 714 series that topped everybody in scratch scoring last week, he was just 72 pins over his average. You’ll find that the higher your average is the more difficult it is to bowl scores over it. Nevertheless, every time we lace up, all of us bowlers always try as hard as we can to bowl as much over our average as possible.
Let’s take a quick look at bowlers who were at least 100 pins over their average last week; Shaiyan Brittle was 106 pins over her average in the Tuesday Nite Mixed. In the same league, Ken Espersen was on target all night long with a solid 665 set that was capped by 247 and 224 games. Espersen, who is another bowler from the finesse side of the game, was 107 pins over his average. He, too, will have a long career in bowling with that efficient style of his.
Next up is the tall and lanky Matt Hodges, who has had a slow start this season but looks like he’s nearly back on track. With that amazing back-swing of his, he rolled a 615 set in the Wednesday night Fraternal league for a score 117 pins over his average. Martin Kubitcheck was 127 pins over his average in the Monday night Men’s Industrial league. Former bowler of the year, Nina Kruckenberg, had things pretty much her way in the Tuesday morning Ladies Workshirkers league, where she fashioned a fine 205 game and 555 three-game series. Kruckenberg has long been one of the top keglerettes in town and for this outing she was a glitzy 129 pins over her average; just like old times.
Topping everybody by a huge margin in this department was Rocky Linebarger in the Industrial League. Linebarger, who is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, had those 3-pound, 6-ounce sticks dancing all over the place as he notched a nice 211 game and 581 series, which put him a whopping 182 pins over his average. It’s always a big deal to celebrate successful newcomers to our bowling world. Dan Wahl has put up some solid numbers in the Tuesday Nite Mixed, with his latest a cool 653 series highlighted by a nice 243 game. Wahl is now averaging an eye-popping 204 pins per game. It’s nice to see a fresh face in our 200 club.
