The HRV girls tennis team had a great start to its league season on Wednesday, taking down the Pendleton Buckaroos, 6-2, on a warm and sunny afternoon in Hood River.
The match provided a good bounce back for HRV after losing a nonleague match to Ridgeview by the same margin last Saturday.
The Eagles made the most of their opportunities on the court Wednesday, including winning a pair of close doubles matches that either went to three sets or required a tiebreaker.
In both singles and doubles varsity matches, HRV won three out of four.
In singles, newcomer Montsie Garrido (second photo) did well in the No. 2 slot, winning 6-3, 6-1. In the No. 3 position, Nikki Paulus won her match 6-1, 6-0 and Kirby Joseph swept her competition in the No. 4 match. Olivia Newcomb lost 3-6, 4-6 in No. 1 singles.
In No. 1 doubles, Tia Semmes (third photo) and Camryn Chambers won their first game 6-4 and closed out with a strong 6-0 game to win the match. The duo of Bianca Badillo (fourth photo) and Ruby Dosier (first photo) held on to win their No. 2 match, taking the first set 6-0, losing 4-6 in the second, and then winning 10-8 in the third. In the No. 4 match Claire Oswald and Alivea Harsanyi eked out a win in the first set, winning 7-6 (7-3 tiebreaker) and then closing out with a 6-1 win in the second. Adrian Vaca and Kayla Green lost a hard-fought match in the No. 3 slot, winning the first set 6-1, then losing the second set 5-7 and the third 11-9.
HRV’s next league match will be Thursday at 4:30 p.m. when the team will play the visiting Hermiston Bulldogs.
