Entering Thursday’s Intermountain Conference showdown at Redmond, The Dalles girls tennis team won three doubles matches and tacked on a pair of singles victories to defeat Redmond by a 5-3 score.

Dalia Mondragon scored a three-set tiebreaker win at No. 2 singles, and The Dalles girls’ tennis team nearly had two other wins in doubles play, but lost in tiebreakers in a 7-1 road loss to Hood River Valley in a varsity match Tuesday at Hood River. “Despite the score, this was a great outing for us, especially for our doubles teams,” TD head coach Debby Jones said.

Although The Dalles baseball team is dealing with three straight losses to Hood River Valley, the third a 19-3 setback at home Tuesday, they can control their own postseason destiny with victories over Pendleton and Hermiston in the next two contests. “We got to get these next two if we want to get in the playoffs, there’s no question about it,” TD head coach Steve Sugg said.

Earlier in the week, The Dalles hosted Hood River Valley in a league match and lost 7-1, with Arlette Santillan taking the team’s lone win Tuesday at The Dalles High School. Although the score appeared lopsided, the Riverhawks had three matches decided by third-set tiebreakers and two others dropped by an average margin of 2.25 points, both in straight sets.

With just four players having previous varsity experience, The Dalles girls’ tennis coach Debby Jones knew it was going to be an uphill battle against a more seasoned Redmond squad. Dalia Mondragon won her first match of the season, and three other matches were three set points from forcing tiebreakers in TD’s 7-1 loss Wednesday at The Dalles High School.

In their final regular-season match, under warm conditions, the Riverhawks managed one singles win and had the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams pick up third-set tiebreaker victories in a 5-3 road loss to the Eagles in a league match played Thursday.

The Dalles boys’ tennis team traveled to Madras Saturday for a double dual against Bend and Mountain View, as the team posted a handful of wins, which gave head coach Shea MacNab a feeling of optimism.
