The Hood River Valley alpine ski team had a good showing last weekend at Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort, posting some fast times at an Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association (OISRA) slalom event — the team’s first race of the season that has an impact on standings. The race course was under the Stadium lift at the resort.
The highlight of the race was a 1-2 finish for the Eagles in the girls competition, with Josie Petersen and Erin Sutherland placing first and second with combined run times of 1 minute, 3.41 seconds and 1:05.09, respectively. Petersen’s second run time of 30.97 and Sutherland’s second run time of 30.94 were the fastest heats by any female skier representing the 12 schools on the mountain that day.
Backing up Petersen and Sutherland in the top 10 were Sarah Hall (fourth, 1:11.14), Eva Jones (sixth, 1:13.32), Reed Bauer (seventh, 1:13.78), and Jesse Nunn (10th, 1:18.19).
Other finishers for the Eagles included Frances Dickinson (12th, 1:19.28), Montserrat Garrido (16th, 1:27.69), Sophie Caldwell (17th, 1:28.48), Ruby Dosier (18th, 1:29.35), Victoria Ervin (24th, 1:35.98), Josephine Dickinson (36th, 1:43.49), Avrie VanTilburg (40th, 1:51.39), Audra Dosier (44th, 1:57.94), Rosalie Dillon (50th, 2:10.00), and Olivia Schifer (54th, 3:06.58). Association team member Mattea Schwab, representing Horizon Christian, placed 34th with a time of 1:42.11.
For the boys, Eman Oliva of BML placed first overall with a combined time of 1:03.30, but HRV association member Colin Howe, who hails from Columbia High, was close behind in second with a time of 1:03.93). Chris McElwee, (third, 1:05.84), Mitchell Lamer (fourth, 1:09.53), and Zack Colson (seventh, 1:13.36) all cracked the top 10 in the race.
Also finishing for the Eagles included Ezra Johnson (13th, 1:19.82), Levi Geller (16th, 1:23.85), and Oskar Anderson (24th, 1:44.90).
HRV is next scheduled to race at Ski Bowl on Saturday in another slalom competition.
