HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley’s (HRV’s) baseball team posted a 1-3 record at the Coach Bob Invitational tournament in Arizona over spring break, where they faced some quality high school programs from the host state and Colorado.
Coach Max Reitz’s Eagles are 3-3 heading into their next contest, an April 3 home game against Portland’s Lincoln at 5 p.m.
Hood River played four games in four days at the Arizona tournament, which included 112 teams from 13 different states. The Eagles lost their opener March 23, 5-3, against West Point High, a 2,800-student school from Avondale, Arizona. West Point scored four runs to take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning.
A day later, HRV fell, 9-3, to defending Colorado 2A state champion, Forge Christian, from West Denver. The Fury won all four of their games at the tournament.
HRV took a day off from play before earning their first win of the tourney, 5-1, over Green Mountain from Colorado on March 26. Later that same day, Colorado’s Ralston Valley scored twice in the sixth inning to beat HRV, 6-5. Ralston Valley, whose roster includes nine seniors, had shut out HRV’s fellow Northwest Oregon Conference opponent, Canby, 14-0, the day before.
Highlights of the four HRV games included:
Leadoff hitter Davin Snyder hit safely in all four contests. He was 2-for-3 with three runs scored in the loss to Halston Valley, and 2-for-4 in the win over Green Mountain.
No. 2 batter Tyson Harjo also had at least one hit in all four games. He was 2-for-4 against Green Mountain.
Landen Pratt knocked in three runs during the tourney and also struck out 10 in his seven-plus innings of work on the mound.
Bodie Stuben earned the pitching win against Green Mountain, striking out eight and scattering three hits. Harjo got the save in relief after entering in the sixth inning.
Also getting multiple hits during the tourney were Trevor Jacobs and Kingston McAdam. Odas Rutkowski had two relief appearances for HRV, including in the Forge Christian game when he came on in the second inning and helped shut down the Fury, who finished with eight runs in the frame.
